What to buy when starting a toy farm
Posted on

Where to begin! So, you have a very enthusiastic young farmer, keen to start his/her toy farm collection but with so much available what pieces do you need to get started?
No farm is complete without at least one tractor!
The biggest question isn’t whether you get a tractor, it is more importantly what make of tractor you buy. Get this wrong and you’ll be back to the drawing board! There are so many makes and models to choose from, however, it is the John Deere, Massey Ferguson and New Holland tractors that are the most popular, or to those less familiar with the makes it could simply be a green, red or blue tractor.
Tractor Trailer
Once a tractor has been selected, another key piece is a trailer. This could be to carry bales, silage, crops or farm animals around the toy farm, over the carpets and around the lawns. There are plenty to choose from, in our house it was always a bale trailer that was the favourite but the livestock trailer also had a busy role to play.
Implements and Machinery
Which implements and machinery, are required will very much depend on your young farmers interests. If they are more likely to be setting up a toy arable farm, then after a tractor and trailer, a plough and baler would be a good starting point. However, if the model farm that is going to be created on the bedroom floor (or any available area) is for the livestock enthusiast, then a feeder wagon may be more appropriate.
Farm Buildings
Farm buildings are the next item on the list, again selecting what your toy farmer will need depends on the type of farm they would be interested in. A tractor shed is great for storing all the toy tractors and scale farm machinery, however the keen livestock farmer may prefer a shed for the animals to be housed in or a milking parlour for the cows. Size is also important when buying sheds, buildings or stables, make sure the scales are the same so the machinery or animals all fit in nicely.
Farm Animals
The final item to get started would be a selection of farm animals, unless you have a young farmer who is keen on one particular type of animal in which case I’d start there, otherwise there are packs of mixed scale animals available for you to start the collection and creates lots of farm yard jobs and activities.
This list will hopefully give you some ideas for where to begin to build your toy farm, but it’s only a suggestion, and the items can be collected and the farm added to in any order as it develops and grows over the years.
